How Much Pizza Do You Actually Need?

Planning a party and wondering how many pizzas for a group you should order? You're not alone. Every great pizza party planner knows that running out of slices is unforgivable — but ordering too many means you're eating cold leftovers for a week. Our pizza order calculator above does the math for you, but here's the logic behind it.

The 3-Slice Rule

The standard rule of thumb is that most adults eat about 3 slices of pizza, while children typically eat around 2 slices. A standard large pizza is 14 inches in diameter and is usually cut into 8 slices. That means one large pizza feeds roughly 2–3 adults. Hungry crowd? Bump your estimate to 4 slices per person for big eaters. The calculator above lets you fine-tune by guest type so you get the exact count every time.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many pizzas for 15 kids?

Kids typically eat about 2 slices each. For 15 children, that's roughly 30 slices total. Since a large pizza has 8 slices, you'd need about 4 large pizzas. If some of the kids are teenagers, consider ordering 5 to be safe — teens can eat as much as adults.

Is it better to get 2 mediums or 1 large?

Almost always go with 1 large. A 14-inch large pizza has about 153 square inches of pizza, while two 10-inch mediums only give you about 157 square inches combined — nearly the same area, but usually at a higher price. One large is typically cheaper per slice and more efficient for feeding a group.

What is a party cut vs. wedge cut?

A wedge cut is the classic triangular slice — the traditional way to cut a round pizza into 8 equal pieces. A party cut (also called tavern cut or grid cut) slices the pizza into squares. Party cut works great for large groups because each piece is smaller and easier to grab, making it popular with pizza party planners who want guests to sample multiple flavors.
